Every once in a while I listen to the New Mexico HRS podcasts. I love these and always learn something. You can find them here or on iTunes.

Clint is doing better

I have noticed a bit of improvement over the last month. My friend, Ann, who comes over and gives Clint his shot, has noticed improvement also.

Last weekend Clint and Gerald moved from the garage to the office. They have been in the house before, during wintertime. It took Gerald a few days to adjust, they both have now settled in just fine. It's nice to keep an eye on them and see what they do during the day (mostly sleep).

But in the last few days I have seen Clint in the box eating hay, not a lot, but it's something he is doing on his own. He is still on some meds, but I have stopped others. Finally getting some Critical Care has helped also, as Clint has lost a lot of weight and still won't eat pellets on his own.

Here are the boys from this afternoon.

From the beginning of Clint's illness I have had great support from the rabbit "community", including Thea, Cat, Christina and Angie (at Special Bunny), along with those of you that have sent messages and left your kind words here, all have kept me, and Clint, going, one day at a time. I thank you all for that.

On another note I want to mention that I had an article printed in the most recent HRS journal. I was so excited, until I read it, and reread it. The changes in the article, I feel, make the story confusing. I wonder what you thought of it.

No matter what I do I cannot remove all the extra spaces between paragraphs, really ticks me off...

Clint is sick

He has been for about a month now. He has an inner ear infection, which sounds simple, but in a rabbit it's not. We are still in the stage of not knowing if he is going to get better. He can hold himself up and get around pretty well. But he still falls over and has times where he doesn't want to eat. Right now he eats all his veggies every day and I syringe feed him twice a day, and he is still on his meds. So send him all your good vibes, he needs it.

For Clint's safety, and because of the cold weather, the boys had to be moved into the garage. It's more like they moved into the senior home.

Daisy and Peter need a forever home

Peter and Daisy have been at Seattle Animal Shelter for over a year, and were at Seattle Humane before that. I few months ago I was asked to foster them because they needed a break from shelter life.

They are a mother and son pair. They are really good bunnies, and, like most bunnies, enjoy running around and exploring, especially Peter. They love apple tree twigs, timothy hay cubes and toilet paper rolls. They are shy, and don't like to be petted. Maybe that is why they have not been adopted, they are not outgoing.

I'm hoping with your help we can find their forever home. They belong to Seattle Animal Shelter, but their foster home is in Skagit County. Bunny bloggers, please repost this in your blog. There must be someone out there that just wants to give some critters a home (indoor only with no dogs or small children please).

I wish more than anything that I could keep them. They have been through enough and deserve a loving home.

JT got a ball for his birthday. He has had a good time with it. The next 2 weeks I will be bun sitting over at Houseful.

Been spending the last few Sundays rescuing some bunnies dumped at a grocery store parking lot. I had some help. We caught 5. There are a few more, they are too hard to get. Here are the 2 that I caught. They are all less than a year old, so I'm guessing someone dumped a litter.

With our own VERY heavy hearts, we regret to inform you that our little boy - half of our tandem of "wonder brothers" (we believe they were sibs), died on Saturday afternoon, following a very sudden illness that, only over the course of the last few days, overwhelmed his brave & sweet little soul. The kingdom is hurting tonight, right there along with a Bunny Mommy & daddy who little "Jaspee" (my own moniker for his greatness) made such an immediate & everlasting impact on in the short 2 or so months we acquired them. How lucky were we??....

His sudden loss is almost unbearable, because it was so quick and so unfair; like his brother, Raisin - these two are in a class by themselves, as we have never had two buns so overly & equally friendly, and just plain happy to see you every time you spoke in their direction, or approached them. Initially, Raisin appears to be adjusting well, as he was afforded much needed quiet time alone with little Jaspee after he passed. Time will tell how he carries on, but we'll be there to support him any way we can...

We will never forget little Jaspee, how he carried on with his brother, exploring the dining room during free-roam "playtime", jumping on top of the kennel to get that better view of the premises, not to mention better access to all the attention from mommy & daddy, and sharing the newest delivery of timothy hay with Raisin.

He (and Raisin) have supplied us with a treasure trove of images & memories over the course of two quick months that will go, over time, to alleviate the overwhelming sadness we feel tonight, and for days to come - it feels awful, and is very hard to talk about. Suddenly, the problems and the gripes of our typical day pale in comparison to what our boy went through today, and the degree of pain he apparently was in. We're mindful we still have 11 more of these amazing critters depending on us, so we'll have to move on, and take care of business, while at the same time, always keeping a place in our hearts for a little boy who latched on to us like none other, and who hopefully is sleeping well - and free of pain - tonight...

Good night, Jaspee - mommy & daddy love you, and we're going to miss you so much...

*EDIT: Raisin and Jasper were with us since April. Giving us 3 full months with the two special boys.

So Sweet Pea and another no name bun that was only here for a few days, went to the Seattle Animal Shelter over the weekend. At the same time we picked up 2 fosters. Peter and Daisy have been in the shelter too long and needed a break. So they will stay with us for a few months.

Which is too bad because there is so much I want to share. But the bunnies keep me busy. Among lots of other stuff.

The Humane Society had to come up with an emergency plan for the shelter animals and any animal brought to them during an emergency. It was a requirement for FEMA. I was asked to do a short presentation on rabbit care and handling. It went well. Unfortunately there are no pictures.

Foster bun Joey left a few weeks ago, on a Sunday afternoon. Monday night we got Sweet pea. She is shy and timid, but has come around and we see she loves to be petted. She is low energy and low maintenance.

Jasper and Raisin are still here. Don't think I am willing to let them go. They are super sweet and have already been through so much. Every week they look better. Raisin loves tearing up the phone book.

Another foster bun

Last Saturday we got another bun from the Humane Society. This guy was picked up by animal control at the local college. He is super cute, in good condition, looks healthy and not scared of his new surroundings. He shares the dining room with the other 2 fosters. I named him Joey. The other 2 hubby named Jasper and Raisin. Jasper and Raisin were shaved and neutered for free as a donation by a local vet. Surgery went well. Vet tec said she has never seen hair mats so bad on a short haired animal. This is Jasper after being shaved. Not a pretty sight. I'm wondering if the yellow is discoloration from being outside for so long, or a natural highlight?

Officially the first fosters of 2011; and what a sad pair they are. They are stinky, dirty, and skinny. Someone found them. This time I believe it.

I believe they are both boys. Not positive on the brown one. Sad thing is that I can't even let them out of their pen to spend time with them; they spray and hump. Well who wants a pet that does that? No wonder someone dumped them. HEY PEOPLE-SPAY AND NEUTER YOUR RABBITS! I would like to choke that asshole that dumped them.

I have already tried to clean up the white one. After an hour I didn't get very far. I tried a short bath and blow dry. It didn't help much, he has too many hair mats. He was tired and held still long enough for me to cut some hair. I found out later that bathing makes mats worse and I should either carefully try to comb them out, or shave them off.

Best meal they have had in a long time. Makes me think they are siblings when they lay on each other.

What a freakin mess.

Bonding bunnies

For the last few months I have been trying to bond JT and Meadow (son and mom). Really I have only done it a handful of times; it's not something I have time for when we have fosters. I can skip the first few steps of the bonding process since they have always been near/around/aware of each other. They never fight when I do have them together in the same space. My hope is to get them bonded soon and move JT into Meadows pen. When I do that I will add a 3 story pen I got from Rabbit Haven. Hopefully having something new and changing her pen a bit will make it less offensive when JT moves in. Here are some bonding pics.

The first 3 pics are the 2nd bonding session, in the bathtub. I didn't get pics of the 1st session, which was in the garage in a dog pen.

Since the guest bathroom is taken by the boys I have done 3 or 4 more sessions in a carrier.

They look like they get along, but there is still some work to do. Meadow thumps a lot and they do their fair share of dominance humping. Soon I will take them on a car ride.

I was hoping to have gotten more replies than I did. Thanks to those of you that actually did try. Some answers could have been found on my blog, but not all of them.

1. Cinnamon, Bambi, Clint, Gerald, Meadow, JT and Hazel. That is 7 total. No fosters right now (thank God).

2. Cinnamon, Bambi, Clint, Gerald came together, all the way from Reno, NV.

3. They are both white, mini Rex's. The only difference is that Meadow has straight hair, JT has wavy hair. But when I have them side by side, it's REALLY hard to tell them apart. Since they are both fixed, if you turn them over and look at their "naughty bits" (as Paula called them) they look the same.

4. JT is named after John Taylor, from Duran Duran. THE BEST BAND EVER!

Well this worked out well, having the boys in the house. It's been so cold they would have been inside most of the winter anyway. Gerald is well. He is old. At the last visit the doc did 2 x-rays. 1 to see if he had a bad tooth root (he didn't). 2nd was a full body because the doc thought there may have been a blockage in his gut (there wasn't). But we learned that Gerald does have arthritis. Makes me wonder if the others have it too. Another issue is that Gerald now has a noticeably crooked or droopy face. Ever since he was cut opened (many times) to have pus drained. So is the droop a result of being cut opened and stitched up, or something else. It's not his entire face; I got a pic of it. So the side that is not drooping is the side that was cut and stitched. He also has some white, scaly patches on his ear. I'm not taking him in to have it, or the face thing checked out. Like I said, he is old. He is eating, drinking, pooping fine, acts and moves fine.

For those of you that haven't heard yet, Hazel decided to stay. She lives in our living room. She is in a dog pen during the day and at night. The x-pen is used as a blockade. 1st it keeps JT in the kitchen when it is his playtime. He goes back in his pen and it is moved so Hazel gets the run of the living room. Unfortunately she has already learned how to move the pen and got out and bit Meadow on the nose. Not bad, tiny bit of blood.

Phone books are F U N!

A few nights ago hubby and I went to take care of the Houseful buns. I'm driving up the hill and just before their driveway: "oh shit". Hubby: "what". Me: "cows!". 3 cows on the road, blocking the driveway. Obviously escaped from farm nearby. I slowly moved my car toward the house and they eventually took off. Good thing, I wouldn't have gotten out of the car if they stuck around. I always tell RG and BL I would be happy to trade my rotten neighbors for their stinky (cow) neighbors...

That night we took care of Houseful's 9 rabbits and our 13 rabbits. Took about 2 hours.

Yes, we now have 13. Despite the fact that I said we are full. When I got the call from the Humane Society asking if I would pick up a momma bun and 4 babies, of course I said yes. Geez. These poor rabbits were all crammed in a very small cage. The owner got the momma, Ruby, 2 months ago, not knowing that Ruby was pregnant! Babies were born a month ago. All are not healthy. Momma has not been fed properly, so her milk hasn't been the best for the babies. When I got them one baby had a huge amount of poop stuck to it's underside. I don't think it was able to pee or poop. Got that all cleaned up and baby is fine now. Another baby has another problem with that area down there. I thought it was getting better, but it's not. He/she will go to the vet Monday. Hopefully the Humane Society will pay for it...geez.

Today we took a trip to Value Village. Got lots of new towels for the buns and I found a great rug for Meadow. Meadow has successfully destroyed her nice sheets. I have even put large bricks in the corners; she can move the bricks. She is a destructive one, just like her son, JT.

Foster #2 arrived tonight. Brought to the shelter this afternoon. Supposedly someone found her a few weeks ago and decided not to keep her.

Why don't I believe that.

She looks healthy. Needs her nails cut. Is a bit chubby. Cute. Not afraid like many of the buns that come here. I put her in the living room. The only room that has no bunny in it is our bedroom...

No more, we are full!

Foster #1 has been named Hazel. No reason except that is the name that just came to hubby. That is how the buns get their names. Name has to come to us.

Gerald is getting better

Two weeks ago I found out that Gerald was on the wrong medication for his abscess. Which is why the pus kept coming back. He needed to be on penicillin! (Remember that if your bun ever gets a facial abscess.) The abscess was lanced and drained many times, the last time he got stitches. Today Gerald had his stitches out. He has been on penicillin for 2 weeks and has 1 more to go. The pus is not coming back and he is healing nicely. The weather is crappy so the boys have stayed in the bathroom. They are fine there, they just don't have much room (at least compared to what they had). I would put them out in the garage, but we have a mouse (or mice).

Last week we got another foster. It's a girl and she is definitely not fixed. It took her a few days to warm up and now loves to run around the kitchen, always circling our feet trying to trip us. She is impossible to pet because she won't hold still. Surprisingly I don't have a name for her, usually a name will just come to me, this time it hasn't happened yet. Maybe you can help me out. She is freakin adorable.

Super cool JT has even paid her a visit. No aggression at all between them. But I'm sure since she is not fixed she doesn't mind having a boy around.

JT meets Santa!

I had made arrangements days earlier to be sure there were no dogs around, Santa's helper was very accommodating. JT did really well, only tried to escape a little. Everyone thought he was SO CUTE! Proceeds benefit the Humane Society of Skagit Valley.

Time for an update

A few weeks ago I noticed Geralds left cheek was puffier than his right. I took him in and it was an abscess. Doc lanced and drained it. Once it started to scab another lump formed. Brought him in again to have it cleaned out. I did this 2 more times, and will do again on Monday. During this time Gerald was given an antibiotic. Since the pus kept coming back (a little less each time) the vet said he needs a stronger antibiotic. So, I am in the process of finding someone who will give Gerald a shot every day for a month. BL over at Houseful gave me a good recommendation of someone that may help.

During all of this Bambi stopped eating for 24 hours. She was also looking uncomfortable and laying in an odd way. I have seen her do this before, but it didn't last for more than a day. On the afternoon of her 2nd day I gave her a small amount of simethicone and Metacam. This did the trick because she was eating a few hours after that and has been fine since.

A wonderful blogging friend at tinroof sent me some apple tree twigs for the buns. I have almost run out of my regular supply, now using very sparingly. All the buns have enjoyed these fresh twigs! Thanks PP! Here are some of the gang enjoying their twigs:

Since Gerald was cut open a few weeks ago, I had to bring him inside because of fly's and to keep the wound clean. I brought Clint in because I didn't want them to become unbonded. I was originally planning on them being inside for a week and a half (and have one weekend were we wouldn't have to clean the rabbitat!). Then one week turned into 2, then 3. Amazingly the boys have adjusted well to the guest bathroom. They peed just about everywhere 40% of the time their first week. Now they only use the boxes! I have seen Clint flop, and there has been no thumping. The boys can go back out when Gerald is healed, but our cold fall/winter has started. When I brought them inside it was about 50-60 degrees outside, now it's 30-40 and we keep the house at 65. I can't put them out now, it's too cold. They may move to the garage for the winter, at least they will have more room out there than in the bathroom.

If this year is anything like last year we should have about 200 kids at our door. I'm sure Meadow, Cinnamon and Bambi will be thumping, as the door and front porch is right by their room.

Ode To Our "Buddy"

On an early October day just over one year ago, we said "hello" and "welcome" to a Momma who would become known as "Meadow", and her three little, newly-sprung whippersnappers, including Laura's beloved JT, and twin "brothers at the water & food bowls" - Calvin and Buddy.

In the beginning, they were three identical, adorable boys - all of which would soon develop their own style, mannerisms, and peculiarities. Calvin would emerge the assertive one; Buddy became the little daredevil (prompting the alter-ego label of "Evel Knievel", and JT became the standout oh-so-friendly one, and our housemate for life!

Wonderful step-momma Laura and I knew we had to give these three the best shot we could, even if it meant to part ways. Calvin's departure to Rabbit Haven was a sad trip for us - they all are, as we always find out. He's doing better than ever from what we hear, as we get periodic updates on his progress - we've been lucky that Laura has managed to hook up with some great people who also have the best interests of the bunnies in mind.

Our little daredevil, "Buddy" got very lucky - he transitioned into home that must have seemed like a wonderland to him, once he got his bearings & got adjusted to his new family. Buddy turned out to be the cute critter you always see in e-mails that get forwarded to you - you know, the ones that show two animals of opposite species cohabitating together in apparent harmony?

He made a "Buddy" (excuse the bun - ha ha) in the family cat, and was the picture of happiness just a week or so ago......

Regretfully, they are the last images we'll have of Buddy.......

Laura found out early this afternoon that our little whippersnapper, our adventurous little "Evel", our Buddy, had died earlier, and without warning. We both have sunken hearts tonight, as I'm sure his new family does as well - not to mention those who have shared Buddy's journey with us via this blog. We're thankful our little boy got to enjoy one "Happy Birthday", and a few days more....

Laura came home from work tonight, after trying to get through the rest of the day, only to be greeted by 4 wild rabbits in our backyard! It was as if the tribes had gathered because they sensed something in the kingdom didn't feel quite right. And they were right.

Laura's taking the night off; I asked if I could personally do this, as I knew Buddy deserved a distinguished send-off, and he was my son, too, and I will miss him all over again.

Now that we have larger litter boxes, Cinnamon has discovered that he can bury himself in the hay. He always does it. He doesn't really dig in the box, just gets in and under the hay.

St Francis of Assisi

I'm not a religious person. But it's nice to think that someone is watching over the animals:

Christians everywhere celebrate the feast of St. Francis of Assisi on October 4 by having their pets blessed in the spirit of this patron saint of animals and ecology.

St. Francis, Rabbits and Fish
One day a brother brought a rabbit who had been caught in a trap to St. Francis. Francis advised the rabbit to be more alert in the future, then released the rabbit from the trap and set it on the ground to go its way. But the rabbit hopped back up onto Francis’ lap, desiring to be close to the saint.

Francis took the rabbit a few steps into the woods and set it down. But it followed Francis back to his seat and hopped on his lap again! Finally Francis asked one of his fellow friars to take the rabbit far into the woods and let it go. That worked. This type of thing happened repeatedly to Francis—which he saw as an opportunity to praise the glory of God. If the simplest creatures could be so endowed with God’s wonder, how much the more so we humans!

Fish were also known to obey Francis. Whenever a fish was caught and Francis was nearby, he would return the fish to the water, warning it not to be caught again. On several occasions the fish would linger awhile near the boat, listening to Francis preach, until he gave them permission to leave. Then they would swim off. In every work of art, as St. Francis called all creation, he would praise the artist, our loving Creator.

M for Meadow

Miss Meadow has a M on her nose. No I didn't put it there, nature did. It's temporary, while she is shedding, again.

Went to a used bookstore over the weekend. Turned in books, and got some books. Actually got 4 books, 2 bunny books. BL recommended the "Rabbits Gentle Hearts" book and let me borrow it. It was a good price, so I got myself a copy. Also picked up "Velveteen Rabbit" on clearance. It made me cry.

IT'S JT'S BIRTHDAY!!!

Little JT turns 1 today. I don't really have his exact date of birth, but I got him, his momma and brothers at the beginning of October and they were a month old then. So I chose today as his birthday.

This morning JT got some birthday oats with his breakfast and had a short visit with his momma, Meadow. He also got a new toy.

His brother Buddy, is in a happy home in Seattle. He was only in the Seattle shelter for a short time. The other brother, the aggressive one, Calvin, is at Rabbit Haven doing well and is up for adoption.

Teddy update

On Saturday, Ted E Bear, a.k.a. Teddy, went to Seattle Animal Shelter. It was sad, we really liked him. Hubby would sit on the floor with him and Teddy would use him as an obstacle course. Hubby had to be in charge of letting Teddy out for playtime, because Teddy liked to spray me.

Once I stopped crying we went to Whole Foods and had some great pizza for lunch.

Bunny Makeover-Bambi and Cinnamon

Bambi and Cinnamon's pen received the same treatment today. Bambi and Cinnamon were moved into the guest bathroom for 24 hours. Geez, they did not like that! Peed everywhere except the litter box. WTH?

Before I put the wood down I cleaned the carpet with a borrowed carpet cleaner. Seems pee goes through tarp, especially when the cardboard underneath moves. Furniture behind pen was moved to another room. Got everything put together and they moved in tonight. They act like nothing has changed (thank God).

Meadow on the other hand is still pretty pissed off and is trying to destroy all the things that she is not supposed to; and trying her hardest to escape.

After: Pink sheets and cat bed purchased at garage sale for a total of $7.

Pens in the same room. I put up the pillow cases on the sides so they don't see each other and drive each other crazy.

Extreme Makeover Bunny Edition-Meadow

Meadow has been living in the guest bathroom. She really likes it there. But it is a bit dangerous; she has fallen off the counter more than once. It is also too warm in the summer and has no natural light or fresh air. So with our garage sale money we got a pen, wood, tile, bricks and sheets.

The other half of the guest bedroom had to be cleared out, bed and treadmill removed (hardly used anyway). Wood was measured and cut. Linoleum was stapled to the top. Here is the newest foster. I use that term, foster, loosely. Technically I take rabbits from one shelter and give to another; transfer, foster. Oh well.

I named him Ted E Bear, Teddy for short. Because he looks like a teddy bear. He is definitely a male and really needs to be fixed. He has sore hocks and has no litter box habbits, which means he has been in a cage. He likes to be petted but is impossible to handle. I'm so happy he escaped and someone found him (or someone was tired of him and gave him up).

I am waiting for the ok to take him to Seattle.

this weekend. It will be sad to see her go. She is such an incredible rabbit! We have never had such a friendly bun around. She is like a dog. Comes running to you, follows you around and LOVES attention. The plan is to bond her with a lonely male lop, so she pretty much already has a new home. I hope the bonding goes well and I hope to get updates.

The other 2 rescues will need some work. They really don't like being petted, but I have been trying. If plans work out they will go to Seattle Animal Shelter this weekend (after we drop off Lea).

Had a little progress with the 2 rescues this morning. The black and white one (spot) is very shy/scared. Pretty much has just been sitting in the back of the cage. This morning they both came up to me when I had veggies. AND I pet both of them when they were eating! Yeah! I hope they get friendlier. The shelter doesn't want them if they are unfriendly. (Yikes, then what will I do?!)

Yes, 9 rabbits.

A coworker caught 2 rabbits in her yard last night. She has seen them around the neighborhood for the last week. After she caught them she went around the neighborhood to see if someone would claim them. No one did. So she called me and brought them over.

They are beautiful buns. Look healthy, but I haven't handled them. One is really scared. It's been 24 hours and she is still pretty freaked out, she didn't even eat her veggies tonight because she stays in one corner. The other has relaxed a bit.

I already have a call to a shelter that I hope will take them.

Believe it or not it's the black and white one that is really scared, I was lucky to get a picture of her eating some pellets. Took the pic outside when my friend first brought them over, but they are inside now.

New Foster Bun!

Picked up this little sweetie 2 weeks ago from the Humane Society. Not sure if it's a boy or girl. Will take him in this week to find out. He relaxed after 24 hours, and after 3 days felt completely comfortable to run around the kitchen, bink and flop. Super nice bun and great personality.

THEN at the end of the week I pet sit for Houseful of Rabbits http://houseofrabbits.blogspot.com/. I'm so excited. I have extra duties this time too-wish me luck!

Miss Meadow update

Meadow had her operation Wednesday morning. My boss let me come in late to work Thursday morning so I could bring her home. (Which was very nice of my boss because she was the one that had to cover for me.) I put out an extra comfy blanket (on the floor) and she sat in the same spot on the blanket all day Thursday. She didn't eat anything that morning. She barely ate Thursday night or this morning (only half her veggies, no pellets).

She also doesn't like her pain med. I managed to get a bit into her mouth Thursday night. So this morning I put it on a piece of banana, which worked.

Tonight I sat with her and pet her. She ate some orchard grass, pellets and oats. That's better! She also hopped around a bit, which looked uncomfortable. Oh and she flopped tonight! Right in front of me. What a treat, she never does that. It gave me a chance to see her stitches, look good, incision is clean.

On Tuesday I got this email from my new friend (Mike is freakin awesome!) at Seattle Animal Shelter:

"Buddy found an awesome home yesterday...he loved the woman, who happens to be a small animal massage therapist! He'll be a free roamer indoor rabbit!" The other male rabbit I brought in at the same time was adopted yesterday.

So how about that? Glad he wasn't at the shelter long.

Tomorrow Buddy will be going to Seattle Animal Shelter. Long story I won't go into. Short story is that Skagit Humane got 3 buns a few days ago, and I almost fostered. But after talking to Angie at Rabbit Haven she spoke with Seattle Animal Shelter. And the rest as they say is history. Angie trusts Seattle Animal Shelter, so I will too.

Leaving me with one foster bun, JT, who I just love, he is a special bun. Rabbit Haven will try to help me find a home for him.

Little aggressive Calvin went Rabbit Haven today. Well, actually he went to Angie's house. She works for Rabbit Haven and the shelter has sort of spilled over into her home. She pet him and handled him right away. There were 2 volunteers there that just loved him. He was put in his new pen (much bigger than what we had him in) and he loved it. She taught him how to go up and down the ramp. He will be ok there. It was sad to come home to an empty cage and hope his first night isn't too scary. We will never forget you little one!

Last week I contacted Angie at Rabbit Haven. She said they are full, BUT she WOULD take the aggressive one (Calvin) in her home. The night before I was to take him down hubby asks "will his life be better there?" Because I have been saying for months that Calvin would probably be in a shelter the rest of his life, and Angie did say that most people tend to shy away from the aggressive ones. She also said that she doesn't have a lot of time to give and may not be able to let Calvin out of his cage a lot.

Then I decided to at least check out Angie's set up and see where Calvin would be living, just to compare. If it's not better than what we offer we will probably keep him.

I also explained to her what I have been going through with the Humane Society (they don't have a good policy in regards to rabbit adoptions) and Angie said this particular Humane Society is notorious for not doing the best for rabbits. That made up my mind not to take them back to the Humane Society. Angie said she would put the other 2 fosters on their website and another website.

A wonderful person in Canada has taken in a sick bunny and needs our help for vet bills. I copied and pasted this from Fez's page http://some-bunny.blogspot.com/:

Poor little aggressive bun has a bad case of fur mites. Vet says that may be the source of his aggression. He got a oral dose of Ivermectin today, and will get another dose in 2 weeks. The other 2 babies, though everyone is separated, need to be treated too. He is a sad little sight.

I came home from lunch today to find Miss Meadow with some blood on her face and side. Then I saw it on the floor and her towel. Took me a minute to see that she broke a toe nail, rear left foot. Nail was still kinda hanging half way up. Yuck. Called the vet (he is THE BEST) and he said we can cut it and wrap some gauze around it to control the bleeding. Well the two adults in the house couldn't muster up the courage to cut her nail (so gross), so hubby took her in. Vet cut it and cleaned her up and bandaged her. Poor girl, gettin extra lovin and treats tonight!

We have a new problem with our problem baby bunny, he has some hair missing from his head. It's so sad. I have no idea what happened, or what is wrong. He really needs a rabbit shelter, or another foster to take care of him and work with him.

Well, the 3 babies were supposed to have gone back to the shelter by now. But we have run into a few snags. One snag is that one of the baby bunnies is aggressive. I thought having him neutered would help, and I thought I saw some improvement over the week. But two days ago he bit me so hard that I had to go to Urgent Care. No stitches, and I already had a tetanus shot, so there wasn't much they could do, but this was the 3rd bite (that drew blood, he has bitten and lunged at me before the surgery).

The other snag is that the two 'good' buns were to go back to the shelter last Friday. On that Friday the shelter emailed me and told me to wait. They are talking to another shelter about taking them; I think they are talking to Rabbit Meadows. I would love if all the buns went to Rabbit Meadows. It's just odd they they are talking to each other. Last week I had asked Rabbit Meadows if they could take the aggressive one, but they told me they are full. I still can't figure out how the two got to talking. It's been over a week now and I'm still waiting. In the mean time the buns are supposed to be transitioning to timothy pellets which I'm afraid to start because if they get adopted they could be transitioned to another brand of food.

So if a rabbit shelter won't take the aggressive one what am I supposed to do with him? If I do find a no-kill shelter that will take him, most likely he will spend the rest of his life there. If you know of a shelter, or person, that would take him and give him a good life, please let me know; I am afraid of him now and won't touch him.

The Ten Commandments for Bunny Moms & Dads
1. My life can last ten to twelve years, with good care. Any separation from you will be painful for me. Consider this before you adopt me.

2. I am not a dog or a cat. I behave like a rabbit. Take the time to study and learn why I behave as I do. When you understand me, your expectations will be realistic.

3. Please provide me a clean and safe place to live, and I will trust you. In my safe place, make sure I have proper food and water to keep me healthy.

4. Don’t just leave me in my cage. I am very social. I need supervised exercise time, and love to interact with my family. You have your work, your friends, and entertainment. I ONLY HAVE YOU.

5. Talk to me. Even if I don’t understand your words, I understand your voice when you are speaking to me. Be aware that, however you treat me, I will not forget.

6. Remember that I don’t understand punishment. Never hit me. I would have no idea what that was about. I am very delicate, and easily injured.

7. Before you become impatient with me for being uncooperative, obstinate, or reclusive, ask yourself if something may be bothering me. Perhaps I’m not feeling well. We rabbits are prey animals and hide our pain very well. Maybe my tummy hurts or I have an infection, or I’m just aging. Sudden changes in behavior often indicate a life-threatening emergency, so take me to my bunny doctor WITHOUT DELAY.

8. Take care of me when I get old. You, too, will get old.

9. Go with me on difficult journeys. Never say “I can’t bear to watch,” Or “Let it happen in my absence.” EVERYTHING IS EASIER IF YOU ARE THERE.

Foster buns need your help!

I neglected to tell you about the great news I had a few weeks ago. I convinced the Humane Society to change their policy regarding rabbits: making it so all rabbits are fixed before going into homes (just like their cats and dogs). I also made an information packet for them to hand out to the new rabbit owners.

That joyous occasion was short lived. Now they tell me they can't afford to have the rabbits fixed. Right now the only rabbits they have are the ones I still have in foster care. This news made me so sad. It is so important that they be altered for so many reasons: it's better for their health, they would have better litter box habits, they can become aggressive, we don't need more babies to add to the pet population, people wouldn't be able to adopt them to reproduce them for fur or meat, etc.

Here is where they need your help. I want to raise money to have the 3 babies altered. (I will pay for the momma to be spayed.) I am asking you for your donations. THE BEST rabbit website is binkybuny.com. I have learned SO much from them, and got lots of ideas AND they have a super cool store. At the store I got Bambi and Cinnamon a fun bun-cave. They sent a little bag of treats as a free gift.

It was easy to put together. It's two levels, but I only made it one. I figured they would use the 2nd level to escape.

But the only rabbits that notice are Clint and Gerald. I put extra blankets on the 2nd level, and covered the box holes with a towel. Winter is when Gerald gets sick. Cinnamon too when he was outside. I always thought it was the cold, but now I'm thinking it's the dampness. Most of the rabbitat floor is covered in newspaper and straw, both are pretty damp by the end of the week.

I still have the foster buns too. All buns are separated now, too much humping and spraying going on. In a few weeks they will be fixed, at least the boys will be, the girl will be ready in amonth or two. I believe there are 2 boys and 1 girl. I gave one of the boys some old pants to dig in when he has playtime in the kitchen.

Momma is so sweet and I have named her Meadow. Thanks to advice from Fez's mom http://some-bunny.blogspot.com/, I believe I can keep her without upsetting Bambi and Cinnamon too much. Meadow lives in the guest bathroom now. Discovered she loves the counter, and pushing everything off of it, doesn't matter if it is glass or plastic. (Thank you for breaking my favorite fall green vase, that I now only have a picture of....)

from last year. I was so mad it disappeared that I didn't redo it. But I found it today! It's late, but still important:

October 2006 is when we got the Reno buns. That first year was really rough, but we made it through. All buns are still healthy and happy, and two were successfully brought indoors.

Unfortunately so many terrible things have happened to almost all the other Reno Rabbits, at least if you believe everything you read. It makes me not trust shelters, especially Best Friends. I hate that I will never know the truth. I makes it hard to look back at the day we picked up our rabbits as a happy thought, when I really just have a heavy heart and wish I could have taken them all.

I can't tell the babies apart. But one still wants to nurse and momma doesn't want to deal with it. She keeps hopping away, but the cage is so small she doesn't get far. Oh, now 2 babies are trying to get some milk, momma won't stay still for nothing.

We already let them out to run around (damn cage had to be cleaned already). What a hoot that was. Baby binks everywhere! Sorry no pics, camera is full. Even the momma came out. She is very good, hasn't shown any aggression at all.

Need help-fostering mom and baby buns

Went to the shelter to volunteer today and saw a mom and 3 of her babies. Babies are said to be a month old. I asked if they needed a foster home and they said yes. I filled out my paperwork and brought them home (after walking a dog and taking care of the cats). Of course the shelter has them in a cage that is too small.

Here are my questions: 1) My book says they should not be given veggies until 12 weeks. How do I feed mama veggies and not have the babies eat it. 2) We want to put them in something larger, but have no money to buy anything. We can put them in the kitchen/dining area, but need something to contain them. Any ideas. 3) The babies should be fed alfalfa hay, but do they need alfalfa pellets too? Mommy will be eating that too, is that okay? 4) They gave the momma this horrible seed treat that she is eating, I'm sure the babies chew on it too, should I get rid of it? 5) If I give momma apple tree twigs is it okay for babies to chew too?

Oh and the rabbits had no water!

So far they are all doing well, they don't seem to be scared. I gave them a bit of alfalfa and a small towel to sit on. We have to bring them back in a month. Here they are:

Saturday morning when I went out to feed the boys I find Gerald's face covered in dirt. Most of the dirt part of the rabbitat is covered in wood (which you can't see in the picture because it's covered in dirt), but there is a spot where there is no wood covering (because we ran out of large boards). So when they boys dig a hole I throw what ever I can find into it, so when they dig again they can't go far. It's funny (not really) because they are a tag team. One digs, then they both move the dirt, then the other digs. Good job guys, you made me late for work (yes, on a Saturday).

on earth, to me, are spiders. I can't stand 'em. They are all gross and creepy. A few years ago one put me in a panic attack. So last night when I went out to feed the boys I see a big nasty in a web that has just got to go. I don't kill them, just move them. Especially this kind, they are big, fat (round like a mushroom top) and very slow. I only see them outside, and in September/October. Here he is with flash and without. But I don't dare get too close. Y U C K!

On Saturday I attended the Humane Society fundraiser, a run/walk. I brought some friends along and we had a great time, the weather was perfect and views were great. Two of my friends that were there were RG and BL from Houseful of Rabbits. Walkers were encouraged to bring their dogs and if you didn't have a dog you could walk a shelter dog. But I got there too late and there were no more good shelter dogs to walk. BL was lucky enough to borrow a dog from her friend. RG was incharge of timing the runners (there was a 5K and 10K run).

Among the spiders and large beetles there are other critters. This moth was hanging out while I was cleaning the rabbitat last week. Here he is resting on the laminant floor, but I'm sure he got his pattern from the wood he was hanging out on.

Well it was a lousy week of record breaking heat. On the hottest day it was 95 in the rabbitat, and 85 in the house. All the animals did well, including us humans because we got a window unit air conditioner. I think we are too far north to be so hot, really.

Anyway I'm still having USB issues. Or maybe it's a camera issue. I borrowed a friends dohickey to get pics off my camera. I put the camera's card in a box and the box plugs into the computer USB, and it works perfectly.

A few weeks ago I went to the $1 store and got the buns some baskets, then I went out into our weed filled yard and put some goodies in the basket. Here is Clint and Gerald enjoying theirs.

After a week the basket handles are gone, but the basket remains.

New USB cord doesn't work

Well I am now really angry and at a loss. The new USB cord gives me the same error message as the chewed up USB cord "USB device not recognized". I have done a few different things to fix the problem, but nothing has worked. I don't know what else to do, except call the Geek Squad, how much does that cost??

I have always loved Cinnamon's back feet, they are just so big and cute. Now that he is in the house and flops sideways I get to see his belly, I find that I keep taking pictures of it.............

well sort of. Took me a while to remember my log in name and password. I'm still without a USB cord, BUT, thanks to a great friend I was able to order one and it's on the way. Thank God, because my camera is full.

So I spent a little part of my birthday, and the day before, bun sitting RGhttp://houseofrabbits.blogspot.com/'s buns. Ok, hubby helped, otherwise I probably would have spent a good part of the day feeding and cleaning 11 rabbits. Everybun behaved, not a thump this time, but I could tell, some did not like us being there.

Buns here are all doing well. Mr Pee Pee is still peeing and the 2 other cats are still outside. Outside cat Stormy keeps getting these little, round sticky balls in her fur. Some days she is LOADED with them; I brush her daily. Do you know what they are and what would happen if I just left them? I'm afraid that she won't be able to clean herself properly if they are stuck in her fur, or would she end up licking them out, I don't know. The little turds (probably just Bambi) chewed the cord; but not all the way through, it's still one piece, but enough that the computer doesn't recognize it. Rarely do the buns go into the office, when they are out we close the door. Sometimes we open the door when we are in the office and it's too warm. I need some baby gates, so I can keep doors open and buns out.

Computer geek is a compliment by the way....

I can probably get a replacement cord, the camera is only a year old, hopefully it won't be too expensive. Thx RG!

Help! I can't get the pictures off my camera!!! And I have a really cute one of Cinnamon I want to share with you. When I insert the plug into my camera (the other end is always plugged into the computer USB that I never remove) the computer tells me "USB device not recognized." Worked just fine 2 weeks ago, and for the last year for that matter, so why now. I have unplugged, restarted, turned on/off to no avail. I MUST get the pics off my camera!!!

Oh and I hate Microsoft and Dell. Just incase you all were wondering. Someday I want to get a MAC!

Backyard cat has a friend

Well Max cat is still hanging around. The indoor peeing doesn't happen as often as it first did (I still have a tarp on the couch, just in case). Max has brought a friend, I named her Stormy. She has worms and I gave her medicine for it, on wet food, but she didn't eat it. I thought all outdoor cats would love wet food, lucky to get a meal even. Oh well, I will try again with different food. Stormy is more skittish than Max, but I was able to cut most of the big balls of hair off of her. Yuck what a mess she is. I brushed her this morning and she looks like a whole new cat!

It was hot this week. But indoor buns and outdoor buns did well. Outdoor buns got frozen water bottles and a fan. Indoor buns (and cats) got wet towels to lay on and a fan. Still, it was miserable for all of us.

Off the rabbit topic for a minute. We have had a cat living in our backyard for about 2 months now. He is ssooo sweet! We don't think he belongs to anyone, we put up flyer's and no one called. We were feeding him when it was really cold out, but not anymore, he has mice. We named him Max.

We have 2 problems with Max:

1. He is upsetting our indoor male cat, who is now peeing all over the house. (Already took indoor cat to vet, it's behavioral.).

2. Max has worms and both ears are infected.

Max belonged to someone, he is not feral. I can pick him up and do just about anything to him. I clean his ears. He is so playful. I know we should take him to a shelter, but there are already so many unwanted cats at shelters; I also don't want to take him to a shelter when he is sick. What to do...

Cinnamon and Bambi got a new basket (which is actually an old basket that has been sitting in the pantry for 2 years). They both started eating it right away, guess Cinnamon found if comfy too.

I never saw Cinnamon chew on apple tree twigs until he moved into the house. This video is so cute, Cinnamon is trying to figure out what to do with it and Bambi treats it like a piece of hay.

I picked up Gerald's medicine last Friday. When I went to give it to him that night I thought it didn't look right. I brought it back to the vet Tuesday night and sure enough "the girl that prepared it didn't mix it." He has been on it for such a long time that I know what it looks like. So I got new medicine and my money back and lots of apologies.

Gerald doesn't like the medicine so I mush up some fruit and mix the medicine in it, which he loves. This is strawberry mush.....

Here is Gerald tonight, still with the ooze coming from his eye. Which used to go away after a few weeks of medicine, now it's not.

Clint ALWAYS has to have his butt in that corner while eating.

Volunteering

For the last 2 Saturdays, and many more to come, hubby and I have been spending a few hours at the local Humane Society working with some dogs that were rescued from a puppy mill. About 400 dogs were rescued, they are at various shelters and foster homes. They were in pretty bad shape; some were debarked. Many need dental care, which they can't get until the judge decides that they no longer belong to the horrid owners. They are all small dogs, many don't know how to play or just be dogs. We just hang out with them, it's a good time, even with the scared ones. Not one dog has shown any aggression at all.
This little gal is pregnant. Vet says she will have 5 pups and is due any day now. She was on the front cover of the local paper recently. She doesn't like to be petted, but likes to hold her toy and wags her tail like crazy when you talk to her.
